In the memories of many, old trains have long served as a medium connecting people; however, as years go by and the carriages deteriorate, they frequently face the fate of merely becoming static exhibits. Recently, we initiated the "R70 Old Train Preservation Project" on campus, introducing an "Adaptive Reuse" approach. While respecting its original look and working within material constraints, our team successfully revamped the interior, effectively turning the R70 into a sustainable and educational cultural venue. The primary goal of this initiative is to preserve the public value of historical memory, enabling students to grasp the concept of artifact conservation through physical objects, thereby converting past history into modern educational resources. During implementation, our initial step was to clearly categorize risk levels and build a detailed status inventory. Structural soundness and safety served as uncompromising priorities, succeeded by the retention of visual and historical traits, and lastly, the evaluation of spatial comfort and tour experience.

Pragmatic and Reversible Space Renovation

Regarding design guidelines, the team strictly adhered to minimal intervention, reversible modification, and high ease of maintenance. Materials and hardware were chosen based on their accessibility and replaceability, with safety features such as anti-slip flooring and proper lighting established as rigid requirements. GREEMA led the interior transformation, keeping the traditional seating aesthetics while introducing modular reading tables. Carriage lighting was designed to be uniform and low-glare to prevent an overly commercial vibe. The floor was upgraded with durable, easy-to-clean materials, complemented by curtains to mitigate harsh afternoon sunlight, drastically improving overall habitability. Vintage nameplates and serial numbers were preserved as historical evidence, paired with descriptive signs to reinforce their educational purpose.

Creating an Interactive Tour System

To elevate visitor engagement, we structured the tour as an immersive learning and creative process. Essential components inside the train feature distinct QR codes, directing users to a single-page digital guide complete with a historical timeline and a parts glossary. Furthermore, we developed various course modules lasting 30, 60, and 90 minutes to suit different audiences, alongside a student involvement framework that includes gathering oral histories and maintaining service logs. The entire project rolled out in four distinct stages. The initial two weeks centered on safety enhancements and anti-slip treatments; weeks three to six were dedicated to reconfiguring the interior flow and seating; weeks seven to ten saw the official launch of the tour content and volunteer training programs; and the concluding two weeks involved a soft opening phase along with the finalization of the maintenance handbook. Moving forward, success metrics will evaluate the volume of participants per semester, the venue's operational hour ratio, and the broader impact of partnerships within and outside the university.
